THE BEAUTIFUL SAONA ISLAND Dominican Republic





 The Saona island is an incredible island with beaches of beauty unimaginable, its waters are crystal clear and its sands fully white. This island has the category of a national park which makes it a protected area. The Saona Island is located to the east of the Dominican Republic and close to the province of La Altagracia, this island is also very known for being a part of the beauty of the magnificent national park of the east.





 The Saona island is inhabited by people, but has a population of only 400 inhabitants. To reach the Saona Island you can do it from the province of la Romana or from Bayahibe, departing from la romana The journey lasts an hour and by bayahibe The journey lasts approximately half an hour. The Saona Island is also known as Adamanay island, named like that by the indigenous people who lived there before the arrival of the European man. The island Adamanay was discovered by the great navigator Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the Americas.



 The Isla Saona has a tropical climate, which is logical since it is a tropical island and is located in the Caribbean, the times in which it more rain in this island is in the month of May and in the month of November, to have little rainfall throughout the year, this makes  possible that the visitors can enjoy more the beaches than any place in the Dominican Republic and the island of Santo Domingo.



This island is formed mainly by a surface coralline, which gives it a rocky structure. The greater part of the island is flat, although in few places elevations that do not pass of forty meters above sea level. In addition to the beautiful beaches that has the Saona Island, we can also find other attractions such as its three natural lagoons which have the quality of that its waters are much more salty than the ocean itself. In these gaps we can find some species of exotic birds which adorn even more the beauty of the place making it a spectacular place.



 Its rocky origin served as the home of the indigenous peoples, so in the structure of the island there are several caves which the indigenous peoples used as homes. Indigenous people who lived in this area were fed mostly of fish and molluscs, there was no place for agriculture due to the weather conditions that there predominate, They also lacked with water springs and much less freshwater wells, to procure the precious vital liquid, indigenous people had to wait for rain to collect the water.


 In some places of the island you can see the remains of shells of Lobatus gigas or lambí, as is commonly known in the Dominican Republic,  As well as some pots of crafts taina and some objects of daily use as tools and some things more that show the way in which indigenous peoples lived.
