   Santiago de los Caballeros is the second most populous city and also the second most important city of the Dominican Republic.  It is located in the northern region of the country and was founded in 1495 during the first Spanish colonization, Santiago de los Caballeros also enjoys being the first Santiago of the American continent, already that there are other cities of the American continent that bear the name of Santiago. Santiago de los Caballeros is one of the main centers of economic, political, social, financial and cultural rights of the Dominican Republic. 




The city of Santiago de los Caballeros has much to offer, in Santiago in addition to being the metropolis of the north region is also an important industrial center where we can find various factories such as: Rum factories, tobacco, cigarettes, textile industries, factories of shoes, furniture and much more, because the industry and agriculture on a large scale are the economic engine that move this city full of honest, hard-working people that gives you a smile and the best attention. Santiago de los Caballeros also has a modern factory of rum and tobacco with very high standards of quality which competes in the most demanding world markets. 

The tobacco industry, as well as in times of Spanish colonization, remains one of the major engines that drive and mobilize the economy of Santiago de los Caballeros and has also been the source of hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect jobs in Santiago and the northern region or regions Cibao. In Santiago de los Caballeros also occurs to export raw tobacco toward the European continent, also the products such as coffee and cocoa.  Due to its great diversity of agricultural production, Santiago also produces many minor crops that supply the market in the capital of the Dominican Republic that is Santo Domingo and other cities like La Romana and San Pedro de Macoris in the east of the Dominican Republic.

Santiago is located in the center of the country; this is why it is also known as LA CIUDAD CORAZON being to just two hours from Santo Domingo and 50 minutes from the city of Puerto Plata, both cities with important ports and airports for the transport of goods and passengers from and toward the outside. The development of the industrial Santiago is divided into two which are: The industrial national production and the industrial sector of textiles and other products which are composed of free zones, these areas are areas of production for export, are special areas because they are free of many taxes, this treatment between the government and the industrialists was done to promote the economic development of the area where you install these free zones. The Free Zones of Santiago are another very important economic engine of the city as well of the Dominican Republic, since it produces 20% of the foreign currency generated by all free zones in the country.

The free zone of Santiago is the first in job creation since this for the year 1995 had a total of 32,000 employees, distributed in 79 textile manufacturing companies, cigars, shoes, plastics, leather, communications, electrical equipment, among others. Already for the year 1998, this had reached a total of 52,943 employees with a total of 114 companies. The production of Santiago is of a high standard, with a variety of productive activities, these activities are the cigarettes, footwear, leather, metal-mechanics, packaging, ceramics, crafts and construction materials, such as cement factory, blocks, windows, doors and many more.

Another very important sector of Santiago that has seen a growth and excellent development is the services sector in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros. A large number of traders and banks have had a remarkable growth in the city of Santiago, as well as communications firms, tourism companies, professionals of various disciplines; contribute positively to the economic and social development of Santiago de los Caballeros. Santiago is also a place with a lot of culture, also with a great history since it was the scene of many events that are part of the history in general of the Dominican Republic, Its name is due to the fact that its first inhabitants whom were 30 knights who were sent by the Spanish crown.

Museums


In Santiago de los Caballeros there are some interesting museums that show the culture of this city. Some of them are:

Museo Folklórico Yoryi Morel

This museum is located in the historic center of Santiago in the Restauración Street.  Exhibits the culture of carnival of Santiago, and shows interesting garments used in the carnival, as well as those used in other provinces. The museum takes the name of the Dominican prominent Yoryi painter Morel.  


Museo del Tabaco

 Is located in the center of the city. Have Different methods of manufacture of the tobaccos, as well as the effect of the tobacco plantations throughout the history of the city. 


Museo Histórico Fortaleza San Luis


   It is located in front of the river Yaque Del Norte in the southwest of Santiago. Formerly this building served as municipal jail and is one of the oldest forts in the Cibao region.

Museo de los Héroes de la Restauración

   It is located within the monument of Santiago, Displays the photos of the Restoration War 1863-1865, Battle between the Dominican Republic and the Spanish army.

Museo de Arte Folclórico Tomás Morel

 In this place you can admire articles related to folklore and everyday aspects of the life of the home of Santiago of the colonial era until 1960. Contains a collection of masks of piglets, representation of the carnival of Santiao de Los Caballeros, It is located in Restauracion Street.



Cultural Center Eduardo Leon Jimenes


Located in the avenida 27 February, Displays items in the cultures of the Caribbean and the Dominican Republic, the natural history of the Dominican Republic, the evolution and culture of the native Indians. In addition, are periodically made art exhibitions of different Dominican artists and international. It consists of three permanent exhibition rooms: Signs of identity, a room with the beginning and trajectory that every two years exhibits the works selected for the Art Contest Eduardo Leon Jimenes and a room for temporary exhibitions. In its gardens is located the Caribbean courtyard, where are sitting projections of events of interest, as well as live performances. The museum is under the authority of the Foundation Leon Jimenes owners of the Cervecería Nacional Dominicana, as well as the Tobacco Industry Leon Jimenes.


Centro de la Cultura de Santiago

   Is the place where is the meeting point of all the cultural events and activities relating to the arts, there are exhibitions of paintings, sculptures, theater presentations, ballet, and concerts, among others. It also works as a center for the teaching of art, in its different manifestations. It is also the home of one of the best folkloric ballets of the country, the Folkloric Ballet of Santiago. Is located in El Sol street corner Antonio Guzman.

Centro Español, Inc

Founded on 5 December 1965, is a sports and social club, created by Spanish emigrants who settled in the Cibao region at the beginning of the twentieth century. This non-profit institution has been designed for that affiliates and them family, enjoy the ideal facilities, to make sports, participate in festive and cultural activities; these place is always considered the best environment for children, youth and adults.
