El Hoyo de pelempito





El Hoyo de Pelempito is a national park of the Dominican Republic, which is located in the border with Haiti in the Sierra de Bahoruco and in addition is located close to the provinces of Barahona, Pedernales and the province of Independencia.  The National Park Hoyo de Pelempito is a geological depression, caused for the collapse of an underground cave millions of years ago, this cavern collapsed because the force that exercised the geological faults in this area on the cavern made collapse. 



This geological depression has a depth of more than a thousand meters below sea level, in addition is the largest geological depression that the Dominican Republic has. The difficulty to enter the depths of this crater as well as the species of wild fauna and vegetation that are found in this place is what adds value, by this many dare to conquer the national park and have the audacity to go down to the depths of the Hoyo de Pelempito.

Within this National Park you can find several climates, from the lowest part of the place you will find a temperature of dry forest and in the highest part you can enjoy a cool climate due to the height of the edges of the crater, which are formed by the mountainous part of the Sierra de Bahoruco.  

The Hoyo de Pelempito account with a variety of trees and plants which are more than 1,400 species. In terms of fauna, The Hoyo de Pelempito account with an amount of some 27 species of mammals and birds, among which are the Barrancolí, crows and the Chirrí of Bahoruco or calyptophilus tertius.

Within the group of animals mammals you can find the solenodonte and the jutã, these two animal species are endemic to the island of Santo Domingo and are in danger of extinction, which makes them more important.

The great depth and the few access roads to this national park were the reasons why within this same developed unique vegetation and animal species within the territory of the island for this reason the Hoyo de Pelempito is considered the National Park with the greatest biodiversity in the country and due to its great potential for tourism and its great ecological beauty, this park has been listed as one of the wonders of the Caribbean, but in spite of having this category has not been able to be exploited in its entirety owing to what they had mentioned, the difficulty to access this by the few access roads.

In the national park Hoyo de Pelempito, there is an excellent vantage point which has bathrooms and dining area. Currently are built channels of communication and the necessary infrastructure, for this wonderful and unique place can thus become one of the main tourist attractions of the country as well as the facilities for the study and research of the species that live there, both flora and wildlife.

To be able to visit this national park it is necessary to contact the Department of Ecotourism of the Secretary of State for Environment. This is so to acquire the necessary information to be able to visit this area of easy and safe way.
