Puerto Plata is a province of the Dominican Republic. Is located in the north of the country, and Includes many tourist sites that you can visit such as: The only Cable Car Funicular of the Caribbean area, Ocean World, Cayo arena, Beach, the 27 puddles of Damajagua, The Cable Car, Playa Dorada, Zip lining of Yasica, Monkey Jungle, Playa Encuentro, Ocean Village and the Fortress of San Felipe. Currently Puerto Plata account with the tourist port Cala amber, property of Carnival Corporation, and this port is one of the most modern ports in the entire Caribbean. 




Puerto Plata possesses some of the best beaches in the country as are Sosua, Playa Dorada, Maimon, Cafemba, Playa Grande (Luperon), Cabarete and Long Beach. In some, as in Playa Dorada, Cofresi, the people practiced various types of sports such as racing moto aquatic, surf, windsurf and kite or sailing. Other beaches are located along the Malecon, or in New Mouth, Playa de Copello, Bergantín o La Mariposa. In addition to beaches and water sports in Puerto Plata can be practiced the hiking, cycling, adventure tourism or visit nature reserves and parks as the Isabel de Torres Mountain, the Lagoon of Cabarete or Los Canos de Estero Hondo. Or deepen in its history through its Victorian architecture, the colonial fortress of San Felipe or the Jewish settlement of Sosua near the year 1945. 


History of Puerto Plata

   In our journey we begin with the first city Patrimony of the Humanity by its great history since it was here where took place the first European settlement and Spanish, it was here where it was founded the first city of America which was baptized with the name of la Isabela in honor of the queen of Spain at that time Isabel La Catholica in 1492.  La Isabela was founded by Christopher Columbus, being the first European settlement in America. For its part, Puerto Plata was founded by Nicolas de Ovando in the beginnings of the Hispanic colonization, toward 1502.

Puerto Plata was one of the cities devastated in 1606 and will not again be repopulated but from 1736. The advent of the times Republicans favored the development of the city, which eventually became the main port of El Cibao, especially for export tobacco for the region. By a resolution of the National Congress of dated 6 July 1867, Puerto Plata was raised from common to the Maritime district.  In 1870 it was the headquarters of the Government of Gregorio Luperon and served as the interim capital of the Dominican Republic.

Since very young, at age 14, Luperón was part of the group of Dominicans who were in favor of the revolution, as a product of this rebellion, is taken prisoner. Manages to escape, and going into exile to Haiti, United States and Curacao.  At the same time, returns in a clandestine manner by Montecristi, and takes part in the uprising of Saban. After a first defeat withdrew to the mountains and from La Vega, promotes the rebellion, until after the so-called cry of Capotillo on 16 August 1863, reaches the head of a canton, and then the rank of general. 

 He was a man of a strong patriotic sense and of great value in the use of the weapons and war strategies, for these merits is designated Chief of Operations in the Province of Santo Domingo, bat facing the Spanish army, which was commanded by Pedro Santana, by then, Marquis of Racing. Gregorio Luperon step to be powerful and disciplined, the Spanish army, was defeated by a strategy of war planned by Luperon, the Spanish army was defeated because the rebels had with the greatest number of warriors and greatest quality of the resources.
