FARO A COLON





The headlight to Colon is a monument in honor of the European explorers of antiquity which discovered the American continent by accident, this is the largest monument of the Dominican Republic and this fact in the shape of a cross, the monument was made especially in honor of the great discoverer Christopher Columbus because in this great monument are the remains of the son of Genoa Italy. This great lighthouse account with 133 lights which form a cross in the clouds.


 This huge monument is located in the eastern part of the city of Santo Domingo or Santo Domingo Timor, to whom you came up with this idea of building such a majestic monument was the General Gregorio Luperon in 1880. In this construction should participate all countries of America and Europe and this monument was thought to commemorate the 400 anniversary of the discovery of the Americas or the new world as it is also known to this continent. The idea of the construction was abandoned and in place of the majestic masterpiece decided to build a monument of Italian marble and place it in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Incarnation along with the remains of Christopher Columbus.




 Then the American occupation in 1916 until 1924, with the proclamation of the new Republic decides to build the grandiose monument in honor of the discovery of the American continent which faith called with the name of Faro a Colon or Cristobal Colon.


 For the construction of the lighthouse to Colon participated in an international competition 1926 architects from all the world, thereby participating a total of 44 countries among the countries of America and the countries of Europe, The architects had submitted 456 projects which were examined to choose the ten best construction projects. These ten projects that woke up more to the interest of the jurors were exposed and subjected to analysis and vote in Madrid Spain in 1929 leaving as winner of the project by the English architect Joseph Lea Gleave.
